For the new collector, satiny luster is more difficult to understand and appreciate than frosty luster. This is due to the fact that it is more subtle in its appearance. As an example, the luster on the coin shown above is excellent in-hand and shows very few breaks in the fields. But most collectors would think this coin has a considerable amount of wear; due to its subtle luster and, obviously, the weakness of strike at the centers.

The really expensive collectors paper money (1,000 to 50,000 US dollars) is usually sold at large auction houses such as Spinks (the coin and currency arm of Christies), Stacks and some paper money specific houses (Currency Auctions of America and Lyn Knight Auctions). They also handle lots in the 300 US dollar range and above.

How does the silver coin's edge look? If the coin edge should be reeded, and isn't (or vice versa) this is a giant red flag, since mint errors of this type are very rare. Also, if the coin has a seam around the edge, a bit of a protrusion on the edge that could be a casting sprue, or file marks indicating a sprue or seam was removed, don't buy the coin!
