The best type of pick box for finding honest to goodness bargains is the flat-rate so-called "junk box." These are boxes into which the dealer has thrown coins that he has determined are not worth his time to catalog and price individually. Sometimes coins get thrown in there just because they're low grade. Other times, the coins might be high grade but just really common. Some dealers even throw in their "attribution challenges!" This latter type of pick box is, by far, the most profitable and most interesting for the cherrypicker! In reality though, most pick boxes contain a mixture of two or more categories of these types of coins. (Attribution challenges are coins that the dealer can't find in his coin catalogs. These are most often seen in World coins, but I've even found genuine U.S. Pre-Federal Colonial Copper coins in junk boxes marked "Misc. Tokens - $2 Each.")

In July 2002, a very rare $20 1933 Double Eagle gold coin sold for a record $7,590,020 at Sotheby's, making it by far the most valuable coin ever sold to date. In early 1933, more than 445,000 Double Eagle coins had been struck by the U.S. Mint, but most of these were surrendered and melted down following Executive Order 6102. Only a few coins managed to survive.

Old U.S. Federal Reserve Notes, 1928, 1934, 1950, 1963, etc. Most circulated Federal Reserve Notes from more modern series are worth no more than face value. Some of the early series notes (1928 and 1934) do carry a small premium, although for circulated notes this premium is small, usually 10% to 30%. Premiums are higher as a percentage of face value for lower denomination notes, such as $5 and $10 bills, as opposed to the higher denomination $20s, $50s, and $100s. Uncirculated notes and Star Notes of some of the earlier series do carry a large collector premium in some cases, and we highly recommend the standard reference book in this field, the Standard Guide to Small Size U.S. Paper Money (1928 to date), by Dean Oakes and John Schwartz, for more information.

Platinum inches higher, gold hits 7-week low

Wed, 06 Aug 2008 13:00:20 +0000
Speculators flocked into platinum on Wednesday after prices tumbled to a six-month low the previous day, while gold dropped to its lowest level in seven weeks before bargain hunters resurfaced.
But worries about falling demand for autocatalysts and poor car sales capped gains on platinum. Gold was under pressure from weak oil as well as a ...]

A major type of luster is prooflike. When dies are readied for production they are polished and/or rubbed with a cloth in order to make them appear bright and new. This polish fades rather quickly and certain issues are almost never seen with mirror-like reflectiveness. As an example, I have seen very few Prooflike coins from Charlotte and Dahlonega and only a handful from New Orleans.

When you are planning to invest in gold, it would be wise to consult an investment consultant. He can help you match your investment goals with the right type of gold purchase. An investment firm can aid in making the right choice of gold investment products so as to hedge your portfolio. Gold bullion coins work well for those who want to capitalize on price movements of the precious metal. It is prudent to buy gold when its prices are low. But sometimes getting the right price may not be that easy. The same holds good for selling too. A buyer should not look at merely the price of the gold investment but its percentage over the gold price or the premium.

Be especially careful not to push dirt around a coin's surface. Coins are generally made of soft metals, so anything harder than them (like small rocks) will leave scratches that can destroy the coin's value.

Another thing to remember, when looking through organized stock, is keeping the coins in the same order that the dealer has organized them in. Usually, U.S. coins will be in year order, with the individual Mint marks grouped together under each year. Sometimes dealers aren't too picky about the Mint marks as long as the years are in order. Whatever his filing system, always be respectful of this, and if you pull a coin out of the box to examine it, be sure you put it back in the proper place.

Are Early Gold Coins Overpriced ?

Mon, 10 Nov 2008 11:43:38 +0000
By Doug Winter - RareGoldCoins.com
A good client of mine recently asked me the question “are early gold coins overpriced?” As with most intelligent questions, I don’t think that this one has a pat answer. My feeling is that some early gold coins are poor value at current levels while others are good to very good ...]

Gold bullion coins usually come in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 and 1/20 oz. sizes. Most countries have one design that remains constant each year; others have variations each year, and in most cases each coin is dated. A 1/10th oz bullion coin is about the same size as a U.S. dime. A 1 oz. gold bullion coin is about the size of a U.S. half dollar.

Gold is a tremendous holiday gift and I encourage you to give gold and silver coins to your loved ones this holiday season. There are two high level reasons I like this idea so much. First, gold is an appreciating asset and store of value. By giving a gold coin, you are giving a loved one an investment that has intrinsic value. Second, in this day and age, gold is not a familiar concept to many people. By giving a gold coin, you are opening up a new investment idea to your loved ones. Perhaps they have not considered investing in gold before. Upon holding their first gold coin, they will most likely be extremely interested in learning more. Your gift could provide the perfect starting point to start mentoring and teaching your loved ones all about your passion for gold.

The first rule is no matter the coin never use harsh abrasives like silver polish. Abrasives scrape the top layer off of whatever they are polishing, and in the case of a coin, that top layer contains all of its detail and hence its numismatic value. Polishing in this way will leave the surface of the coin covered with tiny pits and scratches, not exactly conducive to preserving the coin's value. If you clean the coin using an abrasive, you'll get a shiny coin, but it will not be a coin that collectors are interested in. To see for yourself, try it on a penny, especially one from before 1982 (when they were 95% copper). The coin will be shiny and clean, but if you compare it to a similar coin, you will see that it also looks unnatural. Shiny, yes, but it will not look like it looked naturally when it was minted. Collectors eschew coins that don't look natural.

Perth Mint Unveils Silver Coin Tribute to Mark Discovery of HMAS Sydney II

Thu, 06 Nov 2008 01:15:34 +0000

The Perth Mint marks the discovery of HMAS Sydney II after a mystifying 67-year wait with a magnificent commemorative coin.

Disappearing in November 1941 following a deadly engagement with the German raider Kormoran, the famous Royal Australian Navy cruiser was lost with all hands in the Indian Ocean. Her fate proved baffling until the Finding Sydney Foundation announced on 16 March 2008 that it had located the wreck approximately 207km off the Western Australian coast.

Perth Mint Chief Executive Officer Ed Harbuz said the enormous historical and cultural significance of HMAS Sydney II meant the discovery warranted a special numismatic tribute. "It is a project that The Perth Mint has been exceptionally proud to undertake," he said.

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the superb tribute coin is struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality.
